These are some of our favorite gear, but do shop around as you may find a better deal within the various Amazon shops.  That is, don't take our suggestion as the best deal or even the best too.  We simply tried to find the same make and model we know and love.

Tatars, Sausage, & Kraut

By Jessica Cameron

  • 5-7 potatoes (depending on the size- you need about 5-6 cups of mashed potatoes)
  • 1 jar of sauerkraut (32 oz)
  • 1 kielbasa or sausage of choice
  • Cheese of your choice (cheddar, swiss, parmesan, mozzarella)

Preheat your oven to 325.

Peel and dice to a uniform size pieces your potatoes, and boil until mashable.  Mash the potatoes with some butter, milk/cream, and salt/pepper.

Heat up a skillet to medium heat and brown the outside of your kielbasa, or cook your uncured sausage through three quarters of the way.

In a 2.5 quart casserole dish, line the bottom of the dish with the entire jar of sauerkraut.

Slice the browned kielbasa into ½ slices and scatter all over the top of the sausage covereing the entire area of the casserole dish.

On top of the kraut, and sausage dollop on your batch of mashed potatoes covering the entire top of the dish, mounding it.

Grate your cheese of choice over the mash potato pile.

Put the entire casserole in the over for 35 minutes.  The cheese should have melted and browned creating a nice cheese crust on top.

Let it sit 5-10 minutes as the potatoes will have insulted the steaming kraut and kielbasa nicely. You’ll notice when you dive into it a nice puff of steam will come up.

Serve in a nice big bowl getting a portion of the potatoes, the kielbasa, and the kraut.  Reheats very well.  A favorite with the men!  Definitely a comfort food!  Nothing low fat about this!

Always one of my favorites from X Files nights, and a favorite for the adults in the household. As for 4 year old Ian... any time saurkraut is cooking he asks, "what smells HORRRRRIBLE?" LOL... Thanks for posting. I was wondering what I might be doing different.
